Camera Phones: Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom vs Nokia Lumia 1020

Because obviously for some people the camera on their phone is really important, companies have decided that this particular demographic should get their own models with enhanced cameras because, hey, why not? People like to take pretty pictures, take not so pretty pictures and slap filters on them, or taking terrible pictures, slapping filters on them and then adding some terrible deeply “philosophical” message on top of that, and since many people do it, it’s not a surprise that these camera phones are on the market. The question is, are these phones really worth your money or is this just a gimmick to take your cash? And moreover, which one is better – Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom or Nokia Lumia 1020? Let’s find out.

samsung vs nokia lumia camera

Brief Overview

Nokia Lumia 1020 packs a staggering 38 megapixel camera, which in case you’re bad at math, is a lot more than your garden variety phone (for example, normal S4 comes with 13 megapixels, and iPhone 5 comes with 8). Needless to say you are given the opportunity to make much larger and much clearer images than most phones offer you. Heck, it’s even better than buying a cheap real “point and click” camera. The downside, however, is the fact that it runs Windows mobile, but if you can tolerate it isn’t really a problem.

Galaxy S4 Zoom doesn’t give you that many pixels. In fact, the camera has 16 megapixels, hardly better than the normal S4. That is, of course, until you realize that the phone actually gives you a real optical lens that comes out of the phone. Most other models give you digital zoom, which doesn’t really do anything, but not this puppy, though, this is what you get when you want to, like, take pictures in the distance or something. Perfect for landscapes, too. The zoom lens (that comes out of the bloody phone) gives you zoom up to ten times.

Low Light Conditions

So, you’re in a bar/night club and you’re drunk as a mule, but that sort of thing doesn’t matter if you don’t share it with people you’ve never seen over the Internet so you can somehow get validation from total strangers. What do you do in this situation? You take out your phone and start taking pictures. The question is, since the light conditions are terrible, which phone is it better to have on your at that time?

The answer is Lumia 1020. Nokia have pulled some shenanigans and with combining the information from different pixels and squeezing them together, they get you a much clearer, albeit smaller images in low light conditions. Furthermore, the camera stabilizer will compensate for you being drunk as an Irishman on St Patrick’s day.

Outdoor Distant Photos

Although the Lumia is the favorite for indoor photos, it can’t hold the candle to the S4 Zoom in outside environments. The incredible zoom the phone gives you is unparalleled and easily beats most cameras on the market. When you want to take a shot at something in the distance, or, you know, just zoom in, this is the phone you would want to have on you (after all, it’s called Zoom – that’s not just for show).

Everyday Photos

As far as everyday photos go, both phones will do just fine. I mean, people have managed to make everyday photos with 5-megapixel cameras, right? Both phones give you excellent controls and high quality pictures so here you can’t go wrong with either if taking pictures means that much to you.

If you’re more into taking pictures at parties and clubs, then Lumia is the obvious choice. If you’re a more outdoorsy person, then maybe the S4 Zoom would be a better choice. If you just want to take everyday photos, then why buy a camera phone in the first place? Every phone from 2008 up to today will do marvelously for you.
