Sony has launched its second flagship device of the year – the Xperia Z1 to take on the ever-increasing competition in the high-end segment of the smartphone market. The phone builds on the foundation laid by its predecessor – the Xperia Z, by offering significant improvements in almost every department. In this article, we’ll be taking a closer look at the amazing features of this handset.
The Sony Xperia Z1 supports quad-band GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 2G networks, penta-band HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 3G networks and hexa-band LTE 800 / 850 / 900/ 1700 / 1800 / 1900 / 2100 / 2600 4G networks. It requires a micro-SIM card for network operations and is capable of global roaming.
Dimensions and Design Aspects:
The phone measures 5.67-inch in height, 2.91-inch in width and 0.33-inch in thickness, which is about the same size as its predecessor. With a weight of 170 grams, it is a tad on the heavier side compared to phones like the Galaxy S4 and HTC One. However, none of these phones offer the ruggedness of the Sony Xperia Z1 which is dust proof and water resistant (IP55 and IP58 certified).
Sony took the market by surprise when it became the first manufacturer to come up with a 5-inch display phone in the form of the Xperia Z earlier this year. The Xperia Z1 sports a similar 5-inch full HD 1080p display, but it incorporates a whole new set of Sony BRAVIA technologies to improve the picture quality and viewing experience. It has TRILUMINOS technology for realistic color reproduction, X-Reality for Mobile image engine for sharp image quality, OptiContrast for better sunlight visibility and Direct Touch for effective touch responsiveness. It also features a coating of tempered glass for protection against scruffs and scratches.
The most interesting part of the Sony Xperia Z1 is the 20.7 megapixel autofocus camera which offers the same performance as that of Sony’s standalone point-and-shoot digital cameras. It has a large 1/2.3″ Exmor RS sensor, Sony G Lens and BIONZ image processing engine, which combine together to deliver sharp, clear and noise free images. The camera interface is extremely easy to use and has tons of features to play around with. You get to tinker with settings like ISO, resolution, exposure, color effects and white balance as well as modes like HDR, Steady Shot, Sweep Panorama, Augmented Reality, Timeshift Burst and others. If you’re unable to find the perfect settings according to your requirements, you can turn on the Superior Auto mode which automatically selects the best settings for capturing the perfect image or video.
Hardware and OS:
Internally, the handset features the latest Snapdragon 800 series chipset paired with a 2.2 GHz quad-core Krait processor, Adreno 330 GPU and 2 GB of RAM. Internal memory stands at 16 GB with microSD compatibility of up to 64 GB and the battery is an embedded 3000 Li-Ion unit. As far as the software is concerned, there is Google’s Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system with a light dash of Sony’s customizations and applications.
The Sony Xperia Z1 is now available in-stores around the world in three color options – Black, White and Purple. Sony is also offering a wide range of additional freebies like SmartWatch 2, 60 days Sony Music Unlimited Trial, 10 PlayStation Mobile Games, etc. However, these offers are available in only a select few countries.
